Demystifying Opportunity Zones: What They Are & Why They Matter

Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the Opportunity Zones program is an innovative approach to spur long-term investment in business and real estate ventures in 8,700 designated, low-income communities across the nation (150 in the Houston metropolitan area).  Over 140 investment funds, seeking a capital investment of nearly $30 billion, have been created to take advantage of both the deferral and significant reduction or elimination of capital gains taxes.  Regulations are now in place to answer some previously unanswered questions about the program.  Will this generous tax incentive promote a transformation of some of Houston’s most distressed neighborhoods?  A panel of experts will discuss this program and the potential impacts on our city.
